If the Philadelphia Flyers could’ve imagined a more nightmarish start to their 2013-2014 campaign, they’d best keep it to themselves. A 4-1 loss to the Pittsburgh Penguins on Thursday night, the Flyers struggles were placed under the harshest of spotlights…and their second period performance really displayed just how far they need to go.

At some point in every star players’ career they hit a wall. Their production drops and they don’t have an answer for it. Lecavalier was Tampa Bay royalty. In 2011-12 his point production dropped to just 49, his lowest total since 2001-02. And then there was the lockout.

During six previous opportunities to match their wins-losses record, the Philadelphia Flyers clawed their way to the precipice before having the ground give way beneath them.
Unless you’re the Chicago Blackhawks, this strange season has made for a perpetual scramble. There is so little time to adjust that that every single inch of progress or failure is magnified to the nth degree.
