Ilya Bryzgalov. Ex Flyer.
Certainly this wasn’t the plan during the summer of 2011 when the Philadelphia Flyers acquired him from the Phoenix Coyotes to a nine year, $51 million contract.
But that’s exactly what will happen, effective Wednesday night, as the Flyers will use their second amnesty buyout on the 33 year old Russian goaltender.
According to CSNPhilly.com and CapGeek.com, it is the largest contract buyout in National Hockey League history, paying $23 million of his remaining salary over the next 14 years. He had $34.5 million remaining on his contract.

Raise your hand if you had Phoenix and Los Angeles in the Conference Finals this year. Anyone? If you didn’t, that’s completely understandable. Not like the former had an extensive history of playoff success since moving from Winnipeg, but if you want to use the old “sun shines on a underdog once in a while” reference, it makes perfect sense.
