Russ’s Rants -- Thank You Ruben Amaro

If the proposed deal for Roy Oswalt comes through that will effectively end the New York Mets season and that would make the Philadelphia Phillies a huge contender once again. Here’s the thank you part, with this move, the Mets will realize that changes are necessary and even though they should have, but didn’t make them this season, they will surely make them next season. By changes I mean firing Jerry Manuel and his entire staff and firing Omar Minaya.

When you watch a New York Mets game these days it’s easy to point out the mistakes because the Mets manager makes them every game. Last night the Mets decided that pitching to Albert Pujols was better than pitching to Matt Holliday, who was having a good game. Ok, that worked out well as Pujols got the game-winner in the 13th. The Mets also ran out of position players.

Ike Davis pinch hit in this game, drove in a few runs and then wasn’t inserted into the game? Why not? He's young and he is their best power hitter. Raul Valdes comes into the game for a 1/3rd of an inning and he had to bat in the 13th. Somehow Manuel still has a job? The organization has clearly thrown their hands up and they don’t want to add the expense of firing management so they don’t have to pay additional salaries - - in essence they have bailed out on this season.

Based on what the Phillies are giving Houston, the Mets could make the Oswalt deal. They could offer Jonathon Niese and a top prospect like Fernando Martinez or Cory Vaughn (hitting .309 and the son of former major leaguer, Greg) who looks great with the Brooklyn Cyclones. The Mets could have Oswalt for 2 ½ seasons and that would give themselves a chance to win but they are passing on that opportunity.

A-Rod Mention
I think ESPN is the only outlet giving major coverage to A-Rod’s home run chase. Most fans, including Yankees fans, don’t care about this milestone since he was fingered for using performance enhancing drugs. From 2001-03 were the years he admitted to using and since then he had his top five career-home run seasons. So to me and to many others this milestone is 100% jaded.

That’s not to say Rodriquez wasn’t and isn’t a talented player because he is. All this means is he should have ended up hitting around 500 something career homers like the other mortals in the Hall of Fame and not 600 which used to be a very special number.
