My Top Ten Keyboard Players of All Time
I decided to do this list because guitarists, bass players and drummers always seem to get the pub and I rarely ever see keyboard players getting ranked. So here we go.
1) Keith Emerson – He used to wrestle his keyboards in concert and he’s a classically trained pianist to boot. The Heart and Soul of ELP.
2) Rick Wakeman - Might have the fastest fingers in the business he is a real showman. Besides being the best that YES has ever had his solo work is enduring.
3) Ray Manzarek – It’s not about the speed it’s about the precision and the enduring music that he helped create with the Doors. It’s timeless.
4) Tony Banks – He always seems subdued in concert but the mood and the melodies that he has helped create helped make Genesis a “Super Group”.
5) Billy Preston – He’s had a lot of hits and he’s worked with so many bands including the Beatles. His sound is unmistakable.
6) Richard Wright – When you were listening to the “spacey” sounds of Pink Floyd, that’s when you were listening to his greatness.
7) Stevie Wonder – I remember listening to him when I was a young kid and his sound was intense and then I found out he was blind.
8) Jon Lord – Deep Purple was a worldwide phenomenon for a long time and his playing made many of their hits memorable.
9) Neal Doughty – This guy can really rock it and while many may not think of Reo Speedwagon as having great keyboards, their older stuff does and he’s a master.
10) Steve Winwood – He’s been playing forever and he’s had so many memorable tunes whether it was with Blind Faith, Traffic, or on his own.
