The Flyers Take Care of Business With a Win Against Detroit

Philadelphia -- The game wasn't pretty at times and each team had shaking goaltending but the the Flyers got an important 4-3 win over the Red Wings to take over sole possession of 8th place in the Eastern Conference. They are two points ahead of the Rangers and they have a home-and-home against them next week.

Flyers tough guy Daniel Carcillo did his best Mario Lemieux impersonation by straddling the redline and when he took the puck into the offensive zone he shot high and wide and it sailed past Chris Osgood and into the back of the net to give his team the 1-0 lead just 17 seconds into the game.

"They are a great team and they have so much firepower that they can literally come back from any lead," Carcillo said about Detroit. "It really took a full 60 minutes and a big effort from everyone."

The Flyers broke out with a 4-on-2 and a patient Ian Laperierre made a tape-to-tape pass to Kimmo Timonen and he deposited that to make it 2-0. Osgood was hung out to dry on that goal and the Flyers had an empty net to shoot at.

Flyers defenseman Chris Pronger knocked down Tomas Holmstrom when he was in front of Boucher. That was a rarity, Holmstrom is hard to knock off his skates.

Detroit's Patrick Eaves got in close to Brian Boucher at 14:08 and he took a shot that the Flyers netminder saved but gave right back to Dan Cleary and he put it right in the net to make it a 2-1 game.

The next trip down the ice Cleary almost scored on Boucher but he made a toe save. Then Brian Raflaski took a blast that came out to Darren Helm and he buried it to tie up 2-2 16:23 into the opening period.

With less than 30 seconds to go in the period Johan Franzen and Scott Hartnell went at it.

The Flyers started out the second period strong when Claude Giroux blasted in a rebound past Osgood to make it a 3-2 game 53 seconds into the second period. Osgood hasn’t played since January 24th and it shows.

Flyers forward Aaron Asham got a very important goal putting the Flyers up 4-2 at 17:36.

At 2:22 Pavel Datsyuk scored to make it a 4-3 game.

Carcillo and Holmstrom mixed it up with over nine minutes to go and both players went to the box making it a 4-on-4 situation.

Helm talked about a possible broken nose after the game.

"It was from the first hit I took," he said in a calm voice. "If it's broken, it's broken. It happened my first shift, in the first five seconds....I think it was Laperierre."

With a win over the Leafs the Flyers can literally stamp their playoff ticket. The Wings need one more win to have the same kind of assurance.
