Pronger Pushes Flyers Past Blackhawks
Philadelphia - - With time ticking down in a tie game, Chris Pronger took a pass right to the open part of the net and he buried it to give his team the 3-2 lead with 2.1 seconds left! Claude Giroux found him and the veteran did the rest. The Flyers had scored two goals 2:01 apart for the big comeback win against the Central leading Chicago Blackhawks.
The first period was fast and furious and just before it ended Chicago forward Kris Versteeg just missed a tip in attempt but the period ended 0-0.
Late in the second period Flyers goaltender Michael Leighton made three outstanding saves the last was off a Jonathan Toews shot when he was on the doorstep but he was denied.
With two minutes to go in the second Danny Briere and Chicago goaltender Cristobal Huet got into it, there was an elbow by Briere and a shot to the back by the Blackhawks goaltender.
Shortly into the 4-on-4, Simon Gagne led a 3-on-1 charge but they failed to get a shot on net.
Just a few seconds later Huet found himself totally out of the net and all that was left was a Blackhawks forward Andrew Ladd who cleared the loose puck out. That puck seemed to be loose for a very long time. The score at the end of the second period was 0-0.
The Flyers got the first goal of the game early in the third when Gagne put in a rebound off a shot by Dan Carcillo and the rebound went off the stick and right to Gagne. He buried it at 1:18 of the third period.
Just after a goal was disallowed the Hawks answered back when Versteeg followed up Marian Hossa’s shot and he tapped it in to make it a 1-1 game at 3:01.
Chicago took a 2-1 lead when Hossa took a nice pass from Brouwer and buried it from close range at 12:51.
Just when it was looking bleak Flyers forward Scott Hartnell took the puck down the length of the ice, with Brian Campbell covering him, and he still got off a nice wrist shot that went five-hole to tie the game 2-2 at 17:56. That was his first goal in 13 games.
The loss was deflating for Chicago who had to fly home and play in a day affair against Alex Ovechkin and the Capitals. The win keeps the Flyers tied with the Habs for the sixth spot in the East.
“That’s the best thing about it is that we can go back and play tomorrow,” said Toews, the Blackhawks captain. “We’ll take out our anger on the next team.”
The Flyers travel to MSG to play the Blueshirts at 3PM on Sunday.
