Bergeron, Rask, Too Much For The Flyers
Philadelphia – The Boston Bruins didn’t have a scoring problem against the Philadelphia Flyers. They got a three-point night from Patrice Bergeron and a 5-1 win as a result. They have a five point lead over the Rangers for the eighth and final playoff spot.
The game had some good flow early and Tuukka Rask (stopped 31 shots) made a key save off Aaron Asham with his catlike speed swallowing up the puck while on his stomach. Claude Giroux made the play with a terrific pass.
Blake Wheeler put in a well-placed backhand high in the back of the net at 13:15 to give Boston a 1-0 lead. The Bruins played the 2-on-1 to perfection.
Mark Stuart and Dan Carcillo had a tilt in the first period and that was pretty much a draw but maybe the start of more to come.
Rask stoned Simon Gagne on a breakaway attempt with less than 30 seconds to go in the period.
“You know they got that one good chance in the first on that 2-on-1. You know I thought they really jumped on us in the second when they got that power-play goal,” said Rask, who is in his rookie season. As the game wore on he got more aggressive.
“That’s something that comes naturally when you trust your defense.”
The Flyers scored on the first power play of the game early in the second when Jeff Carter blasted in a wrist shot at the 44-second mark.
The Bruins answered back with a goal by 40-year-old Mark Recchi who got a nice pass from Bergeron on the doorstep and he quickly deposited the puck at 4:37.
Stuart had a second fight with Laperriere in the second period.
Bergeron got his second goal of the game after a shot from Marco Sturm and he easily put the rebound past Flyers goalie Michael Leighton (stopped 21 shots and was relieved by Brian Boucher) to give his team the 3-1 lead at 10:30.
The Bruins went up 4-1 on a goal by David Krejci at 11:16.
The Flyers had a chance to get one back but Gagne shot one through the crease with a lot of empty net available.
Later in the third Carcillo got into it with Matt Hunwick and the Bruins player got a roughing call and Carcillo pushed away the ref, got a game misconduct, and that setup another Bergeron point (he had three) and Boston's fifth goal at 12:35. Sturm's second point on the night.
“We didn’t make it easy on ourselves,” said Flyers defenseman Chris Pronger.
Prospect Watch – Boston - Brad Marchand – C – Good checker…good cycler. Knows where to go on the ice. Looks to go back on defense. He was the 71st overall pick in 2006. He played over 11 minutes in his 13th NHL game.
