Off The Post - Is Sean Avery the NHL’s Dennis Rodman?

They often say about pesky hockey players that you hate playing against them, but love having them on your team.

Think back to the “Rat” Ken Linseman, Esa Tikkanen, or more recently former Sabres and Stars forward Matthew Barnaby.

However, New York Rangers forward Sean Avery may prove to be the exception to the rule.

Avery’s super aggressive style of play and his singular ability to agitate his opponents has earned him the moniker of “Most Hated Player in the NHL,” in a 2007 Hockey News poll after garnering 66.4% of the vote from nearly 283 NHL players.

On one side, that style of play helped the New York Rangers frustrate the Atlanta Thrashers in the first round of the playoffs and give the President Trophy winner Buffalo Sabres a run for their money in the second round.
