Catching Up With Vince Papale
by Russ Cohen
Thirty years ago a talented football player from South Philadelphia had reached a crossroad in his life and that prompted him to tryout for the Philadelphia Eagles after he heard about coach Dick Vermeil’s “open tryout” invitation to the masses of Philadelphia. On August 25th the Disney movie entitled, Invincible will premiere and then the world will see how Papale pulled it off. Until then we caught up with him to find out a little bit more about the man.
Reporters: What kind of movies do you like?
Vince: I like action films. I like action books. I like any books where there are terrorists involved, spy novels, those kinds of things. I like WWII books. The movies that I watch, I don’t go into the chick flicks. I’m an action kind of guy. Actually most of the movies that I watch are movies that my kids want to watch. I really enjoyed Cars and Superman. I like fantasy because there is so much reality out there right now, I sort of like escaping.
Reporters: We saw you running in the movie, was there anything else you did to keep in shape at the time?
Vince: Running was always my forte and that was my in because I was a track guy. So I ran and ran and ran. I used to actually lead the team every year in the off-season running program that they had. I ran constantly and every once in a while Dick Vermeil would jump in and join me on one of the runs. I used to run through the streets of South Philadelphia, those runs (in the movie) were true. And I used to run in Roosevelt Park, across from the old Vet, and that’s where I used to run.
Reporters: Did I read your stats right, did you only have one catch?
