Everybody is talking about Ilya Bryzgalov’s mask and some are still hung up on the departures of Jeff Carter and Mike Richards via trade but the Flyers best offseason acquisition may have been Brayden Schenn. It might take a few years to see the full effect but he could be a member of the Orange and Black for the next decade. With this talented forward you have to look past his 8 games of NHL experience to understand what happened with him in Los Angeles and why he’s poised to have a bright future in the City of Brotherly Love.
“I was there three months, eight games, there was a lot of uncertainty,” said the young pivot. “It was a good experience.”
Schenn had an early season knee injury that really derailed his chances with the Kings. In the World Junior Championships in Buffalo, he had a strong showing potting 18 points tying the all-time record for Team Canada in a single WJC tournament. An impressive feat that seems to have been forgotten since the trade.
In a few days this burgeoning player will be 20 years old and while it seems like he is coming into his own he still has a lot of on the job training to finish before he can reach his ceiling.
Brayden is close with his brother Luke, and they do work out together in the offseason. He got better and better in rookie camp and here was my last observation about him before it ended.

At 6-1, 190 he’s pretty sturdy although he can still improve with his 1-on-1 battles. He’s a smart calculating player on the ice, with excellent vision, and he has a way of getting off fast accurate shots in traffic to get some of his goals. He works hard and he has an excellent stride when he’s skating. He will be the Flyers 3rd line center but he has the ability to be a top or second line guy someday.
Schenn is a very different player than Richards so the two should never be compared. Right now he loves the market that he’s in and the plethora of veterans surrounding him in the lineup should bring out the best in him. Fans shouldn’t expect him to have more than 40-50 points if he doesn’t get any power play time.
“It’s a little different; the LA media wasn’t as big. There’s a lot of work to be done and I will try and take full advantage of it.”
Before the season starts the Saskatoon prospect will be talked about as a Calder contender and rightly so. He’s in a great situation here in Philadelphia and the Flyers will bring him along at the right pace.
