Some players have posters made with the definition of “Greatness” like Wayne Gretzky. What did this hockey player do to gain this stature in his sport? Was it the way he carried himself? Was it about performing in the clutch? Was it the way he dominated the game?
Sometimes players are heroic. Dallas Cowboys quarterback, Tony Romo, has a punctured lung and a shoulder injury and yet he gutted out an amazing performance on Monday Night Football, willing his team to win when he certainly could have pulled himself out of the game to fight another day.
Enter Mets former shortstop Jose Reyes. Well he’s still a part of the team during his “exclusive” negotiating period, but if he doesn’t sign in a few weeks he will be a free agent. He certainly wants to get paid, he wants to test the market, and somebody must have told him wining the batting title might get him the “Carl Crawford” money that he thinks he deserves.
Well 15,000 or so Met fans showed up today, to a day game in the middle of the work week on a Jewish holiday to possibly see their beloved shortstop play one more game and hopefully secure a batting title. Well it turned into one more at-bat and maybe a batting title and after one batter the air had been let out of the ballpark, Reyes pulled himself out of the game after a bunt single, and some fans booed. Some fans even missed it!
Reyes, hasn’t bunted for hits much at all since coming back from the DL. I found it very curious that he even did this and when he did I thought, “wow , he is putting it all on the line” and after he reached first base, he begged out of the game, against his manager’s wishes, nice. I think he improved his contract status and disrespected the game in the process, as a few others have done before.
This will be attached to the shortstop’s “permanent record” and he managed to get a ton of fans, mostly at home, to not care about the batting race as a result. Some had told me they would rather see Ryan Braun win in because his Brewers had already clinched a playoff spot and yet he was in the lineup tonight trying to get three or more hits in hopes of winning the NL batting title.
Reyes won’t be back with the Mets. The writing is on the wall. A lot of fans have already turned the page. The season is over but this will linger over the winter.
