Russ’s Rants -- Sanchez Did His Part, Did Schottenheimer?

Mark Sanchez had a bad first half. His entire team did but he was legitimately bad except for the perfect touchdown pass he threw to Santonio Holmes that was called back because of a holding penalty. Actually that game had a few too many holding penalties but in the end it didn’t cost them.

In the second half Sanchez found Plaxico Burress three times in the end zone and that was the game. He saw a mismatch and he continued to exploit it. When the Jets were getting penalized in the third quarter the Jets ran a 2nd and 25 run play that gained around 3 yards? Why? That was ridiculous. When the Jets were driving after gaining a lot of yardage with off-tackle runs they tried to run up the gut in the red zone, again why? Fans were groaning and they were right. They quieted down when the Jets scored.

When Burress scored his second touchdown the score was 21-16 Chargers. Why not go for two and try and make it 21-18? They were rolling and it could have made it a field goal game but no they played it safe and got the extra point.

Fast forward to the 4th quarter and the Jets scored their final touchdown but not they were only up 24-21. Had they tried for two and made it they would have been up 25-21 and they could have played things differently and not tempted fate with Philip Rivers trying to get the game-winning score after that.

Nick Folk’s field goal then made this game a touchdown and you lose situation but again it could have made it a touchdown to tie the game, at home, that’s a big deal.

Also head coach Rex Ryan still leaves the game up to his defense to win yet the most clutch player on the team is Sanchez with Revis a close second. At some point the head coach has to setup the game for the offense to win. They never go for the juggler when they have a slim lead and that’s why they ended up with a field goal late instead of maybe a touchdown when they were in the red zone. To me when a team kicks a 30-yard field goal it means that they got conservative and settled for it.

If the Jets are championship bound Brian Schottenheimer has to be aggressive like he was in the second half rather than stale like the offensive was in the first half.

They are 4-3 but their schedule gets a lot tougher after the bye week so let’s see how they react against Buffalo. They should include a few trick plays but since the departure of Brad Smith that seems to be out of the playbook.
