Now entering his eighth season with the New York Mets I believe the team should trade David Wright rather than Jose Reyes and re-sign the shortstop with that savings and I will tell you why. Wright is no longer a clutch run producer, he gets his numbers but so far this year (and counting) he’s left nine runners on base and he’s already good for more than a strikeout per game!
Reyes makes the spectacular plays in the field, Wright doesn’t. Reyes is healthy again and he’s hitting and running like he used to, while Wright is just underwhelming even though his batting average is well above .300. I don’t want to pit one against the other, but I would have to trade Wright because he’s no longer a threat and pitchers are more than willing to throw to him in all situations because the Mets third bagger can no longer protect the plate and his pitch recognition is suspect.
Reyes continues to frustrate opposing teams with everything that he does, and sometimes he frustrates his own manager, but he’s still a dynamic player while Wright is no longer a potential superstar.
Wright’s steals and more important, stealing percentage is down (even his fielding percentage is down), almost everything is down except his games played, and he is very durable. He makes more than $14 million and he’s not earning his keep, and I know he’s not alone on that ballclub but I expected more from him and still do.
So far in 2011 he is hitting .000 with runners in scoring position and two out. This is a very small sample size but this has been going on for the past two seasons now.
Some will disagree with this but sometimes the “right” decision has to be made and if this team can’t afford both players I would keep the shortstop, and yes I know how many third baseman the Mets have had in their history and I don’t care.
