Russ’s Rants - - Jets Need Coaching, Not A Cheering Section

I think a lot of Jets fans are hoping after the Jets putrid performance last week that the coaching staff works hard to prepare for the New England Patriots and doesn’t say anything in the press. This week will be a test for Rex Ryan who called a timeout last week to have a tantrum on the sidelines, the refs weren’t the reason the Jets lost that game, even the absence of Nick Mangold wasn’t the reason they lost, they lost because the entire coaching staff has failed to get these players to play a full game in the past 3 weeks.

The offensive line was just that, and even without their star center, everybody else forgot how to block and since that all but killed the running game, quarterback Mark Sanchez had very little time to throw, that doesn’t give him a pass, he made plenty of bad ones.

Joe McKnight has been a bright spot for a few weeks now. We now know that he can run back kicks, but when will we all find out if he can run the football. LT can’t be a feature back and Shonn Greene can only be successful with great blocking, it’s a fact. The only cure for a sagging offensive line is a young back who can do it without stellar blocking and an offensive scheme that makes it easier to run, like double tight end, draw plays, trap blocking, things that don’t seem to be in the Schottenheimer playbook.

Right now the Jets have two very big, underperforming wideouts who need to be more physical and perhaps, just perhaps, be willing to go over the middle instead of always looking for the sideline rout or post to the end zone; Santonio Holmes and Plaxico Burress have looked like marginal players lately. When the Jets offense got “stale” in the past Brad Smith and the “Wildcat” were there to bail the offense out, well that’s no longer an option so this is the week the predictable playbook has to go out the window and for a change, the head coach might have to nix a play or two when he thinks the wrong call is being made.

When Joe Namath “Tweeted” some of his thoughts on the Raider’s loss the head coach didn’t appreciate it. Well the head coach could learn a thing or two from Joe, who was not only a winner but also an analyst on Monday Night Football for a while. He does know football and he also knows bad football when he sees it. For the younger fans who ripped Joe and sided with Rex, I will add this. Namath had the best arm in the history of the Jets and practically the NFL. He had a will to win that no Jets QB has ever equaled since he left the game and he wants to see this team succeed. Ryan could and should learn a thing or two from him if his ego would allow it.
