Philadelphia – The Columbus Blue Jackets have just two wins on the season. They are 2-11-1 and they are winless on the road. Whether you have close games or you are blown out 9-2 like they were tonight. A loss is a loss and 0-7-0 away from Columbus is unacceptable.
“This is definitely embarrassing for us as a team. It's tough times right now, “said Columbus captain, Rick Nash.
Columbus had an atrocious defense in front of their goaltenders tonight. It never got any better and the Flyers had a lot of odd-man rushes (nine within the first 14 minutes) and at times it seemed like they had a power play at even strength.
“We were obviously just embarrassed and embarrassed very quickly, time after time. We were down within the first fifteen minutes,” said Columbus head coach, Scott Arniel.
When the first period ended the Jackets were down 5-0 and not only did they never recover they continued to play like a lost team for the better part of the second period.
“I don’t care; it’s all about them going out. They’ve got to play the game whether it’s our young guys doing the wrong thing at the wrong time or not doing things that they have done for years. Whether its leadership, whether its sticking together as a group, right now we’ve hit a lot of bottoms this year and this was another big one,” Arniel added.
The coach seems to be out of answers, the players were trying to digest this loss and for rookie Ryan Johansen this in uncharted waters.
“We weren’t prepared to play a hockey game. I’ve done interviews like this after so many games now you can repeat what I’ve been saying. We’ve said everything that needs to be done and we’re not doing it. (long pause). It’s frustrating.
This is a learning experience for the former first round pick and right now he is trying to battle through it with his teammates.
“We tried to come out of there to start the second period and get some life and nothing happened,” Johansen added.
The team now has 4 days off which is the worst thing for hockey players because they would rather get out to the rink the next day trying to right their ship.
We have a bunch of days of practice now. It’s not fun coming to the rink right now….We have to find a way,” said Johansen, who will next face the Chicago Blackhawks on the 10th. It’s important to note that this youngster has two-game winning goals.
Is Arniel worried about his job? He snapped back quickly when he was asked about it, “Next question, alright, next question, I’m not in charge of that. I’m worried about what I have to do tomorrow with this hockey club.”
If he gets a chance to coach another game will his team right the ship or will they continue to look lost out on the ice? Right now that’s the million dollar question. They are currently the worst team in the NHL by far.
