Voorhees – Don’t worry about who won the prospect game, the results aren’t important, what is important were the performances. Just saying Brayden Schenn got a hat trick and four points isn’t enough, there was a lot more that went into it. So here are my scouting notes from this game.
Brayden Schenn – He was the straw that stirred the drink today. He was making everything happen. He was very calculating; he was thinking one move ahead of the opposing defense. He worked the corners. His shake-n-bake move on a penalty shot was amazing. He showed off his quick snap-shot in traffic, and he was back checking hard. He played a complete game and GM Paul Holmgren noticed as well.
“The week for the overall camp, I couldn’t be more happy with how it went… Brayden Schenn obviously has been through this before with LA and that probably gave him an edge, added to the fact that he is probably one of the better players here too…I’m real happy with how the week went.”
“First game in two months, just go in there and try and work hard. I wasn’t coming into it looking for that (his 4 points)….I got a lucky break there, a got a puck in the mouth, Schenn laughed. “I got a break there.”
Sean Couturier – He’s smart with the puck and he makes sharp defensive plays, he knows when to give up the puck and when to give up on a play which is hard to teach. After this camp he has Canadian World Junior Camp and his camp for his junior team, Drummondville. Zac Rinaldo, who was hitting everybody, and Holmgren remarked about that in a positive way, got a big shot on the kid and he bounced right back up. Couturier got schooled on offensive-zone face-offs, that’s where he needs to get stronger to make the jump, and that’s why I think he will be headed back to juniors after he has a taste of training camp.
“No matter what you always have to work hard,” he said, while he was thumbing through a copy of “Talent is Overrated” that his coach, Ian Laperriere gave out to all of the prospects. “It’s an adjustment, all the guys are stronger physically….for sure I have to work on it (talking about his face-offs).
Oliver Lauridsen – He was the best defenseman in camp. He has excellent body positioning, he’s strong, he’s big, (if you’ve been reading my reports), and he can clear the crease. He has his head on a swivel and his lateral movement and skating is terrific for a man his size. He is a good passer and he created a hint of offense in this game.
Erik Gustaffson – He was smooth and he passed the puck well. His size still may be an issue at the listed 5’10.
Tom Sestito – He did a good job of digging and controlling pucks down low. He skated well and he is a real threat to make the big club.
Adam Phillips – He is big, and he got better as the game went on. He was a little stiff in the first but for the next two periods he showed good puck control, the ability to create some offense, and a few good defensive plays.
Kevin Marshall – Looked strong and fast but I’m not sure he’s an NHL defenseman.
Mark Testwuide – at 6-3, 210, he was looking great in a game like this and his one-timer was impressive. He scored a few; let’s see what he can do in camp.
Petr Placek – He gets himself into good position on both sides of the puck. A developing talent.
Tye McGinn – With Schenn on his line he was making things happen. He had a nice wraparound shot and he was tenacious when the puck was loose down low.
Nick Luukko – He proved that he is a good puck moving defenseman who doesn’t make many mistakes out there.
Niko Hovinen - He fills up a lot of net. He has quick reflexes but there’s a lot more to this prospect so look for an upcoming feature on him. His goalie coach is Pasi Nurminen, former NHLer.
