At the age of 20, Winnipeg’s Alexander Burmistrov (8th overall pick in 2010) is quickly becoming one of the league’s exciting young players. He took his lumps last year in his rookie season but with a goal and an assist tonight, he helped his team get a 9-8 road win, the first of the year, and now he’s a point-per-game player.
At 6-1, 180, he’s no wallflower he registered 4 hits tonight against the Philadelphia Flyers and he’s tied for the team lead in scoring with veteran Nik Antropov. He’s also a +3 on the season which is a great improvement over his -12 of last season.
In this game he knocked in the seventh goal, while on the doorstep. A cagy play, he’s a shifty player with great speed and a fast shot. He can carry the puck well and he doesn’t take bad penalties. He’s a very humble guy who appreciates playing in front of the fans in Winnipeg as compared to Atlanta.
“I was really surprised how well we were greeted in the first game, even though we lost, “Burmistrov said. “The interest there is amazing. How everybody loves’s hockey. In Atlanta, I would sit on the bench and talk, and the building was so empty they could probably hear us in the press box.”
When asked where he pictures himself two years down the road. He responded, “I hope to be chosen for the next Russian Olympic team, otherwise I take it day-by-day.” Those games will be played in his homeland, Sochi, Russia.
In a game that both teams probably want to forget Burmistrov played well. He has a very high ceiling and he’s the kind of player who can start to pile up the points now that he’s figured things out. If he does that he could be one of the players that head to Ottawa for the All-Star game later this winter.
Notes: This came from the Elias Sports Bureau and the Flyers PR staff:
