Philadelphia -- To read a full recap of the game click on over to http://centericephilly.com/bruins-beat-flyers-3-2-in-ot to relive the action. It was an exciting 3-2 OT win for Boston but there were two players who stood tall, Tim Thomas for Boston and JVR for Philadelphia.
Thomas stopped 52 pucks, and the Bruins won this game short Adam McQuaid (played 4:04 and he made the flight home with his teammates), who landed in the hospital after hitting his head and neck into the boards when he tried to land an elbow to Flyers captain Mike Richards. The Bruins played with five defenseman for most of the game and they overcame a strong Flyers offense because the Boston netminder was not only on top of his game but he anticipated exactly where the Flyers were going to shoot and he stoned them after he did relinquish two early goals.
“The game started out they got a couple quick goals and a couple of funny bounces too. I think Giroux was trying to shoot that on the 2 on 1 that they scored the first goal on. As the game went on I was just trying to work hard and to build to get myself into the game. By the time the third period rolled around I was starting to feel really good. Fortunately I was feeling good at the right time because they got some shots and some opportunities and kept me busy for the third period.”
Thomas was also very honest about the way that the last goal went in.
“We talked about this already but I saw, I think it was Lucic put his hands in the air so I immediately went like this (Raises his hands) and I saw Boucher’s shoulders slump as if it went in. Then play went on and I was like ‘Oh no’ because I was already starting to get that overtime win rush. I was actually thinking to myself afterwards ‘I hope they don’t get another shot right away’. I needed to settle back down.”
JVR was on a mission for Philadelphia
He logged over nine minutes of ice time in the third period alone. He had both goals; he had 8 shots on goal and two hits. He really led the Flyers offensive push.
“I know I had a lot of good chances and I’m probably going to be up all night thinking about some of those. It’s tough but we are going to get back at it in Game 3 and we’ll be ready to go.”
The rendition that Lauren Hart gave of “God Bless America” with the video of Kate Smith, was her finest and the fans were the loudest I’ve heard since they started doing it in the 2005-06 season. Even Flyers coach Peter Laviolette had some thoughts on it.
"You know certainly tonight was awesome, the fans, the way they got going, and you know I just listened to the way God Bless America played out to the fans, and the events of the last couple days; just being a part of a sporting event that you can rally around like that is a special night."
Both teams will face-off again on Wednesday night at 7PM in Boston. The game will be televised on Versus and CBC.
