2011 Mock Draft – Picks 21-30

PostDateIcon Thu, 2011-06-16 13:29 | PostAuthorIcon Russ_Cohen

21) Rickard Rakell – 6-1, 185 – C - Ottawa Senators – This Swede had 43 points and he was a +12 in his first season for the Plymouth Whalers. He was good in the World Juniors especially on the power play. He can shield off defenders and shoot with accuracy to score.
22) Tomas Jurco – 6-2, 193, RW - Anaheim Ducks – He has terrific breakout speed, he’s able to get around opposing defenses with ease and his stickhandling is NHL quality. He has an amazing backhand which is an underutilized shot in the NHL these days. He had 18 points in 19 playoff games for the Memorial Cup winning Saint John Sea Dogs.

23) Boone Jenner – 6-2, 196 – C - Pittsburgh Penguins – This kid does it all, wins face-offs, can score, may not be an NHL star but will make it to the NHL and become a very good player for years to come when it’s his time.
24) Rocco Grimaldi - 5-6, 163 - C - Detroit Red Wings – He has the kind of determination that will make him a solid NHL player someday. He’s very noticeable on the ice and his offensive skills are undeniable. Grimaldi has heard a lot about his height over the years but his play does the talking and it’s never been an issue at any level. He possesses a great one-timer, can finish as well. He has tremendous skating ability.
25) Zack Phillips – 6-1, 181 – C - Toronto Maple Leafs – He seems to be the player that gets lost in the shadow of his talented teammates like Penguins first rounder, defenseman, Simon Despres. He’s really good on the power play, has excellent vision and he has good stick skills and presents his stick well. He doesn’t have great speed at the moment and I’m not sure he’s a future star. He has some great teammates and he plays well with them, the test for him will be to see how he can perform away from them like he did in the top prospects game. He had 24 points in 17 playoff games. (25-30).
26) Ty Rattie – 6-0, 175 – RW - Washington Capitals – This winger skates through the high slot quickly and he has a fast release. This winger has natural goal scoring ability. He had 22 points in 21 playoff games for a talented Portand Winterhawks team. He has good enough speed to lead the break and dish the puck as well.
27) Mark Scheifele- C - Tampa Bay Lightning – This sniper had 75 points in 66 games for the Barrie Colts this season. He needs to work on his defense. Had a crazy lacrosse goal at the CHL Top Prospects shootout. He’s a terrific power play guy and has a fast release, especially from the slot.
28) Oscar Klefbom - 6-1, 189 – D - San Jose Sharks – He is used to a pro style power play but may not have the role if he makes the NHL. He is a good two-way blueliner. He will be a good puck moving defenseman.
29) Joe Morrow– D - Vancouver Canucks – He had 20 points in 21 seasons for Portland in his 4th season in the WHL. He can move and pass the puck with ease. He makes good-smart decisions. He’s very strong, and he’s a very good skater. His dad, Dave was drafted by the Canucks in 1977 in the 4th round. His brother Josh was drafted by Nashville in 2002, neither played in the NHL.
30) Stuart Percy – 6-1, 198 – D - Toronto Maple Leafs –Good solid blueliner, who has toughness, and plays in a pro style defensive system for Mississauga. He has a lot of offensive upside. He had 12 points in 20 games in the Memorial Cup. He is willing to block shots.

Picks 20-25 will be released soon. I am currently interviewing players for my XM show, Hockey Prospect Radio (XM 92, Sirius 207) and for features that will lead up to the draft where we will have a live radio show from Minneapolis, Minnesota June 24-25, at the 2011 NHL Draft.
